Holding the Line: Selected Essays in American Literature and Culture.
Bern: Peter Lang, 2009. 350 pp.; bibliography, index.
This book has a new introductory essay giving a personal response to the forty and more years over which these essays were written.
The book selects about half of the academic essays I have written over my career. It includes essays on Nathaniel Hawthorne, Walt Whitman, Gertrude Stein, Richard Wright, Allen Ginsberg, Albert Camus, Paul Bowles, Jean Genet and Herbert Huncke. Other subjects covered are American linguistics from Whitney to Sapir, ideology and American consumerism, and the Western.
Issues within American cultural studies are addressed, there is an analysis of the prose of Muriel Rukeyser, and an evaluation of the unacknowledged contribution of American poets to American Studies.
